Monthly Maker: Ken Bullock

By March 21, 2018Monthly Maker

Our monthly maker for March is the one and only Ken Bullock, our long-time serving craft signwriter here at Make Baltic. Ken is a freelancer and has managed to stay true to his art-form over the years by favouring traditional hand-written techniques which has given him his signature style! Over the years he has created countless signs which are instantly recognisable all over Liverpool. His work spans from art institutes such as The Bluecoat to alternative music venues like Camp and Furnace, and has even made our sign at Make. North Docks. We sat down with Ken to learn a thing or two about sign writing and to find out more…

What do you make?

All kinds of signs, everything from handwritten posters to big illuminated signs.

What sparked your passion for making?

I started in the Sign Trade in 1968, Learning my Trade from a Master Craftsman.
Ever since then I’ve been making different signs.

What has been one of your favourite projects you’ve ever worked on and why?

My Signwork is all over this City and many other Cities!
But having my Signwriting all over the back of the Bluecoat Building which is the oldest Building in Liverpool being 300 years old is cool.

Tell us one new and interesting thing you’ve learned recently.

New Technology is not the be all and end all.
All you need is your Brain, Eyes and Hands, leave it standing!

What would your advice be for anyone who wants to work for themselves?

1.Business is Business.
2.Never work for Nothing.
3. The only person who gives a shit about you is you….
(If this sounds too harsh don’t go into Business it’s not for you)

What are you working on next?
All kinds of stuff – mostly freelance  projects.
I’m supposed to be retired…

Where can people find your products and services?

You can have a look on my instagram @kenthesignwriter for some of my work and upcoming projects or you can find me in the Make. Baltic Studios most days….
My work is all over Liverpool, just look up….

Be cool it’s good for ya…..
